Fight review: WBC Thai boxing, Fighting Force Championship, Bournemouth - 11th March 2012

8th May, 2012

Event: Fighting Force Championship, WBC Thai boxing
Venue: Bournemouth, UK
Date: 11th March 2012

Ross Smith (Portsmouth Muay Thai) v Tom Perkins (Sukothai) 77 kg
C class - 5 x 1.5 minutes

Another great performance from Ross, who showed good composure in picking his shots as well as fighting well off the back foot. A nice controlled start from both fighters as they gauged the others strengths and looked for any weaknesses. Ross quickly assumed the ascendancy and was landing the more powerful, effective shots and had his opponent looking rattled with some heavy blows. Ross kept turning the screw each round and picking up the power and pace, proving  too much for his opponent who failed to come out for the fourth round. Well done Ross on another skillful performance, another win and another stoppage.

Simeon Elliott (Portsmouth Muay Thai) v Andy Turland (Thaiworks) 68 kg
Chang Cup - Super welterweight
B class - 5 x 2 minutes

What can you say about Sim? The most unassuming guy in the club, always polite, always helpful and never says a bad word about anyone… And now proof that nice guys do come first as he is the inaugural Chang cup super welterweight holder after an absolutely awesome performance against Andy Turland!
Having seen Andy fight one of our fighters previously, we knew he was a dangerous and game opponent but we had a plan worked out how to deal with him and full credit to Sim as he followed it to the letter!
Sim just blew Andy away and it was the most relaxed I have ever been whilst cornering one of my fighters as the plan was working a treat. Full credit to Andy who never stopped trying and always looked dangerous but Sim was in full control. A series of powerful punches and devastating knees to the head caused Andy all kinds of problems and the referee stopped the fight in the fourth round. After two hard contests prior to this that Sim lost, it was a fantastic occasion to return to winning ways. Well done Sim!

Luke Baker (Portsmouth Muay Thai) v Harry Baker (Sukothai) 76 kg
Chang Cup - Super middleweight
B class - 5 x 2 minutes

A great performance from Luke. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to stop Harry from winning the Chang cup in an exciting fight.
Despite giving away a fair amount of experience, this was only Luke’s fourth fight, he kept pushing Harry right to the final bell. Luke is a very strong fighter and the plan was for him to close Harry down and use his strength to sap his energy and grind him down as the fight wore on. Unfortunately Harry was using his legs, and in particular his push kick, really well and making it difficult for Luke to close the range and make his strength tell.
Luke fought valiantly on and never stopped and did get through with some powerful shots which definitely made Harry uncomfortable. Alas, Luke didn’t get enough shots in and Harry remained in control landing the more effective shots and so took a deserved win. Good experience for Luke though, who did himself and the club proud and will have learnt a lot to take into his next fight.

Many thanks to Lorne for having us on and myself and all the lads really enjoyed the show as well as all the promotional stuff the day before at the weigh in… interviews, videos, etc made it feel very professional.

Fight review: KO Bloodline 3, London - 4th December 2011

21st December, 2011

Event: KO Bloodline 3
Venue: London University Union
Date: 4th December 2011

Sim Elliott (Portsmouth Muay Thai) v Anthony Smith (Singto)
72 kg C class - 5 x 1.5 mins

Another “humdinger” of a fight for Sim… he must be due an easier one now?

A first round which to me suggested Sim should win was cancelled out by Anthony Smith throwing a huge right hand and Sim having 2 eight counts in quick succession.

Another count followed in the third round and from there Sim’s only game plan was to knock the other guy out. Once again Sim displayed tremendous heart and courage and never stopped trying but both fighters were heavily fatigued and Sim just couldn’t find the finishing touch, whilst Anthony skillfully racked up the scoring shots.

A clear win for Anthony but yet another opponent relieved to hear the final bell as Sim refused to be beat. The crowd once again showed their appreciation with a huge round of applause.

Fight review: WBC Championship Thai Boxing, Bournemouth - 11th September 2011

21st December, 2011

Event: WBC Championship Thai Boxing
Venue: Sandbanks, Bournemouth
Date: 11th September 2011

Lance Jones (Portsmouth Muay Thai) v Paul Long (Sitwatnoi)
77 kg C class - 5 x 1.5 mins

Lance’s first fight for almost exactly a year and perhaps the ring rust showed. The fight was fairly even at range but Paul was the stronger in the clinch, landing the better knees and showing more control.

Lance was the first to admit he didn’t fight his normal style we see in sparring and therefore wasn’t taking the fight to his opponent when he had him on the back foot. This allowed Paul to get back on an even keel and take the fight on a points decision with his better clinch work.

None the less it was a good experience for Lance and he can build on this and learn from it for the next one… well done.

Fight review: SKA Fight Night, Portsmouth - 3rd September 2011

21st December, 2011

Event: SKA Fight Night
Venue: South Parade Pier, Portsmouth
Date: 3rd September 2011

Luke Baker (Portsmouth Muay Thai) v Deyance Along (Red Dragonz)
76 kg C class - 5 x 1.5 mins

This had a nice even start to the fight with both fighters exchanging longer range kicks and punches trying to feel each other out.
Deyance proved dangerous in the clinch with some good knees but as the fight went on Luke started to exert his strength and land some strong blows which allowed him to control the ring.
The judges all found in favour of Luke who won a good points decision.

Sim Elliott (Portsmouth Muay Thai) v Ed Kelly (Red Dragonz)
70 kg C class - 5 x 1.5 mins

Ed Kelly came out the traps and caught Sim square with a big, big punch. Sim was given an 8 count and took some time to regain his composure. The fight progressed with Ed continually catching Sim with hard shots but Sim always pushing forward and never letting up.
By the fights end Ed was looking as if to say, ‘What have I got to do to stop this guy?!’ Ed won a convincing points victory but Sim showed tremendous heart and courage and won a huge round of applause from the crowd!

Ross Smith (Portsmouth Muay Thai) v Dwaine Mitchell  (Ultimate Gladiators)
76 kg C class - 5 x 1.5 mins

An excellent display of composure from Ross saw him control the fight from the first bell to the last. He fought well on both front and back foot and despite his opponent trying till the end, Dwaine had no answer and Ross took a well deserved points victory.

Terry Langdon (Portsmouth Muay Thai) v Luke Alexander (Ultimate Gladiators)
76 kg C class - 5 x 1.5 mins

Final fight for the Portsmouth Muay Thai club, Terry’s second fight and one he wanted to win badly to make up for the loss in his first.
I am glad to say he duly delivered, and much like Ross, it was another excellent display of composed technique. Terry worked the low kick particularly well and was causing Luke a lot of problems.
He finished the fight with a vicious combination from which his opponent couldn’t recover and the referee stopped proceedings. Not just a win but a stoppage! To say Terry was happy was an understatement!

Special Thanks:
Thank you to the Portsmouth Thai Boxing students for the hard training and dedication.
